A car accident is always an exceptional situation – whether it is a minor fender-bender or a more serious collision. In such moments, it is important to stay calm and proceed systematically. These five steps help you stay on top of things and secure your claims.

Step one: Secure the accident site & help the injured
Immediately turn on the hazard lights, set up the warning triangle, and put on a safety vest. Provide first aid to the injured and, if in doubt, call the police and emergency services.

Step two: Inform the police (if necessary)
In cases of personal injury, disputes, or unclear fault, you should always call the police. This ensures an official accident report, which is helpful later for damage claims.

Step three: Document the accident
Take photos of the accident site, the vehicles involved, license plates, damages, and the surroundings. Record the names, addresses, and insurance details of all parties involved, as well as any possible witnesses.

Step four: Hire a car appraiser
Contact an independent car appraiser to have the damage professionally assessed. The appraisal forms the basis for your claims for compensation – especially against the opposing party’s insurance.

Step five: Report the damage to your insurance company
Inform your own insurance company about the accident as soon as possible – even if you are not at fault. In the case of a no-fault accident, the at-fault party’s insurance usually covers the costs.
